FAQ

Antibiotics in France — common questions

Can I get antibiotics over the counter in France?
No. Unlike some countries, antibiotics in France require a valid prescription (ordonnance). The pharmacist cannot sell them without one. However, getting a prescription online takes 30 minutes and the pharmacist can then dispense immediately.
I have a prescription from my home country — will French pharmacies accept it?
EU prescriptions are generally accepted in France for a limited quantity. Non-EU prescriptions (UK, US, etc.) are typically not accepted. In that case, you can use our service to get a valid French prescription quickly.
What if I'm allergic to penicillin?
Mention your allergy when you first message the doctor — before the consultation. Penicillin alternatives (macrolides, cefalosporins with caution, etc.) are available and the doctor will prescribe accordingly.
Will the doctor prescribe antibiotics just because I ask?
No. The doctor follows French clinical guidelines. Antibiotics are only prescribed when clinically appropriate. If your symptoms do not warrant antibiotics (e.g. viral infection), the doctor will tell you and may suggest alternatives. You are not charged if no prescription is issued.
