Common questions about sick notes in France

My employer is in the UK / US — will they accept a French sick note?
We provide the medical certificate in bilingual format (English and French). Most international employers, universities, and travel insurers accept a medical certificate from a licensed doctor regardless of country. If your employer requires a specific format, mention it when you contact the doctor.
How many days can the sick note cover?
The duration depends on your clinical assessment. Typically, a teleconsultation can cover 1–5 days for an uncomplicated illness. Longer sick leave usually requires an in-person review. The doctor will discuss this with you during the consultation.
I'm a tourist and don't have a French CPAM number — can I still get a document?
Yes. The arrêt de travail (the official French sick leave cerfa) requires a CPAM number, so it's only available to residents. However, we can issue an attestation médicale — a signed medical certificate — which is appropriate for tourists and expats needing proof of illness for travel insurance or international employers.
Can the doctor backdate a sick note to yesterday?
French medical ethics prohibit backdating certificates. The certificate will be dated from the day of the consultation. If you need to justify absence from the previous day, explain your situation to the doctor — they can note the approximate onset of symptoms in the certificate.
