Prescription in France

What antibiotic will I receive?

For uncomplicated cystitis, French guidelines (HAS) recommend:

Fosfomycin trometamol (Monuril 3g) — a single-dose sachet, available at any pharmacy in France without waiting. Very well tolerated and highly effective for uncomplicated UTI in women.

Depending on your symptoms, duration, and any allergies, the doctor may also prescribe nitrofurantoin, pivmecillinam, or a short course of fluoroquinolone for resistant cases. You'll discuss your history directly before the prescription is issued.

The prescription is a valid French ordonnance — accepted at every pharmacy in France.

Frequently asked

Questions about UTI treatment in France

Can I buy UTI antibiotics without a prescription in France?
No. Antibiotics require a valid prescription in France (unlike some other countries). However, pharmacists can provide a short 5-day supply of fosfomycin in certain cases — or you can get a full prescription from us online in 30 minutes.
I'm a tourist / expat — will the prescription work at a French pharmacy?
Yes. A French ordonnance is valid at any pharmacy in France regardless of your nationality or insurance status. You pay cash at the pharmacy (€3–12 for fosfomycin) and can claim reimbursement from your travel insurance if applicable.
What if my case is complicated or I have a fever above 38.5°C?
Signs of kidney involvement (high fever, back pain, chills) suggest pyelonephritis — a more serious infection. In that case, the doctor will advise you to go to the nearest emergency department or urgences. We do not prescribe for complicated UTI remotely.
I'm pregnant — can I still use this service?
Pregnancy changes the antibiotic options significantly. You can message the doctor and they will assess, but some cases will require in-person management for your safety.
🚨 When to call emergency services instead If you have high fever (>38.5°C), severe back or flank pain, chills, nausea, or vomiting — these may indicate a kidney infection. Go to urgences (emergency room) or call 15 (SAMU) immediately.
